Reading Prove Novel for Quins
By Jo Everett December 10 2003
In their last game before Christmas, Harlequin Ladies continued their impressive league form with their 30-point defeat of Reading.
After receiving the kick off, Quins were quick to dominate the game. Within minutes, flanker Chevonne Rennison had busted through the Reading defence and offloaded to winger Saskia Brazier-Kobus for the try.

Quins sustained their attack, quickly working their way back into Reading’s half. Their second try came again as a result of a powerful forward run, backed up by excellent support play, with number 8, Pippa Butt, securing the points. Reading continued to persevere in defence, challenging hard at the rucks, but Harlequins denied them any decent possession. The final try of the first half came when fly half, Dani Knight side stepped her opposite number, then ran through and scored.

The second half saw a more determined Reading side force Quins to work harder in attack. Harlequins continued to play a patient game, using the strength of their driving maul from a lineout to power across the line, with prop, Tanya Wilson touching the ball down.

The home team began to kick for territory, making the most of the setting sun in Harlequins’ eyes. Reading were then able to make their strongest attack of the game, forcing Quins right back onto their own try-line, but the Harlequins defensive line proved too impenetrable. With Reading beginning to give away more penalties and receive two yellow cards, Quins made the most of their attack. The final two tries came from the strong runs of Rennison and Brazier-Kobus, late in the second half.

With a game in hand after last week’s abandoned game against BG Combination, Harlequins finish 2003 posing a strong challenge for the top of the table, four points behind league leaders Chesham. The Ladies hope to make the most of a well-deserved break over Christmas, before continuing their league campaign in January.
