The Start of a Beautiful Friendship…
By Sam Marshall December 2 2003
Sunday saw the first ever match for Teddington Antlers U16s girls as they faced Harlequin Ladies U16 at their home ground in Bushey Park. Teddington are also an associate club of NEC Harlequins.
Between the two sides, 14 girls played their first ever match, although both sides have been training since the start of the season writes Sam Marshall.

Harlequins got off to a really strong start, having a core of more experienced players, and it wasn't long before Hollie Blenman made it over the line for the first of her 6 tries. Emily Hampton also made an excellent account of herself on her debut at wing for Harlequins as she ran home a further 3 tries. Teddington came back well and continued improving, looking dangerous just before half time with a well executed chip and chase by Lizzie Leycock which unfortunately went a fraction too far.

In the second half however Leycock made the most of her speed and evasion and gave Teddington their first well deserved try. Teddington made the most of a tired Quins defence and scrum half Mariko ran home another two tries for the home side. As both teams played on, Quins still dominated in their attack and a further 4 tries were scored for Quins by Hetal Gohil, Sarah Trundle, Jennie Sinfield and Hialeah Letterman. However, the game ended with a final say from Teddington as Louise Phong ran the length of the pitch for the final try of the game.

Teddington Antlers Coach Emma Ley commented, "It was brilliant to see the girls finally get out there and play a game. You would never have known that this was their first game as a team. My fellow coach Lisa and I were really impressed at the commitment and determination shown by the girls today".

This sentiment was echoed by Harlequin Ladies Coaches Sam Marshall and Rachael Bullingham who said, "the skill level of the girls was excellent and this match really gives both teams a good platform to work from in the future. It was great to see the way that the more experienced players took responsibility to help the new players. I think they all really learned something".

As well as building on the recent profile of rugby in the nations psyche, both teams are looking forward to playing each other again in the New Year.
