Ladies All Over the Park
By Jo Everett October 14 2003
Inspired after watching England’s defeat of Georgia, the Harlequin Ladies went on to defeat Rosslyn Park, 7 – 25 in Sunday’s friendly.
Quins received the kick-off and quickly forced Park onto the backfoot. The home team defence held out well, but the Quins attack was relentless. It was Alex Burbidge, at fly-half, who took the ball blind and danced around the defence to open the scoring for Quins. Just minutes later, Burbidge scored again, after a well-timed offload from prop, Louise Clancy.

Park worked hard in defence but Quins were to break through again when number 8, Pippa Butt drove through and crossed the line.

The second half opened with a much stronger looking home side. Quins now had to work a lot harder in defence and fight hard to regain lost possession. Quins were still dangerous with the ball in-hand, particularly Burbidge, who went on to complete her hat-trick.

Harlequins’ final try came after an outstanding run by prop, Chevonne Rennison, making a break from the Quins 22, and powering all the way to the opposition 5 metre line. Winger, Sophie Hill was there in close support to receive the pop pass and finish off the try, her first as a Quins senior.

Rosslyn Park refused to let Quins keep a clean sheet, making the most of a Harlequins knock-on, picking up and running in the ball.

The afternoon proved to be a great opportunity for both teams to prepare for their forthcoming league fixtures, and to try out players in new positions. The Harlequin Ladies would particularly like to thank Anna Bullingham for sponsoring this game.
