Quins Ladies Beat London Welsh
By JoEv October 7 2003
With a sudden bye to the second round of the National Cup, Quins Ladies made the most of a last-minute friendly against London Welsh on Sunday, finally winning with a score of London Welsh 0 - Harlequin Ladies 44.
When Fly-half, Alex Burbidge, scooped up the Welsh kick-off, the home team was instantly put under pressure. Quins were patient with their attack, and steadily forced their way deeper into Welsh's territory. Winger, Mel Antao, held tight to the ball in a driving maul and it was Hooker, Jo Everett, who took on the ball and powered over the line to open the scoring for Quins. Dani Knight, at Full-back followed up with the conversion.

Quins continued their attack with Outside Centre, Kate Sinfield, taking the ball on from a Quins lineout. Just minutes later, Burbidge ran a great angle to break through the Welsh defence. In a half where Quins dominated possession, two further tries were to follow: One from Knight, running in support of the ball then carrying it over the line, and a debut try from flanker, Laura Quinn.

Harlequins continued to dominate in the second half, keeping London Welsh from creating anything from the possession they had. With excellent support running featuring strongly, the tries kept on coming. Centre, Donna Tracey, scored a hat-trick thanks to her strong-running and ability to wrong-foot the defence.

The final try of the game came from Antao, taking the ball on from the maul and diving over the line. It was a credit to London Welsh, that they played a determined game for the full eighty minutes. With Quins facing Premiership team, Roselyn Park, in next week's friendly, this was certainly an excellent chance to try out new combinations and phases of play.
