When they did so, the floodgates opened and they won at a gallop 8 – 47 with five tries coming in the last quarter of the match.
The win and the manner of it brought a rare smile of satisfaction to Mark Evans’ face, especially at the second half performance which he categorised as evidence of Quins advance as a club. The young team had shown commitment and speed, enthusiasm and skill, as well as a clear determination to win.
From the kick-off Quins captured the ball and Bath were immediately penalised at the resulting ruck. Dunne’s kick made the score 0 – 3. From the restart, Guest’s fine catch gave Quins possession and a lively attack pressed Bath back until they were relieved by a penalty against Barratt for failing to release in the tackle. However, Quins regained possession and a series of good forward drives brought them close to the Bath line and Horstmann eventually broke through the defence to score the first try after 12 minutes. Dunne missed with the conversion. 0 – 8.
The remainder of the half was a story of effort marred by some handling errors and determined defence by Bath who resisted strongly despite having both scrum and line-out severely disrupted when they were in good attacking positions. Drop Goal attempts by both sides went wide. Bath opened their score after 18 minutes when Whatling converted a penalty in front of the posts awarded for an offence in the ruck. 3 – 8. A similar penalty for offside allowed Dunne to score again ten minutes later. 3 – 11 was the half-time score.
Quins came out for the second half obviously determined to put the game beyond doubt, mounting a series of attacks in which the backs showed good penetration, one kick through for the winger to run onto being only just cleared to touch a couple of metres short of the try line. Quins continue to attack and eventually a quick series of passes to the right wing found Bemand able to run through a gap to score. The conversion was missed. 3 -16.
Bath mounted an attack down their left wing and a kick through which was clearly knocked on and possibly across the dead ball line was awarded as a try to Johnson. It remained unconverted. 8 – 16. But this was a minor reverse for the Quins. Their backs began to find a greater fluency. The passes were going to hand and the support runners were always there. Just after the final quarter began another fluent move saw Henry Barratt receive a fine miss pass from Bemand, straighten and run through the Bath defence to score. Jarvis converted. 8 – 23.
Now the floodgates began to open. A fluent move down the left saw Moore just short of the line as desperate defence forced him into touch. Forward pressure then produced a try for Tani Fuga under the posts and the with Jarvis converting the score became 8 – 30.
Only a minute later came a try to equal any scored by Quins this season, including that by Dunne against Wasps. From their own 22 metre line, the backs began a running and passing move in which the ball went through at least six pairs of hands along the left edge of the pitch too quickly to record the participants eventually coming to Sherriff whose pass put Tom Williams through for the try which had seemed inevitable from the very start of the sequence. 8 – 35
Only three minutes later Matt Moore was put in at the corner 8 – 40 and finally in injury time Luke Sherriff scored and Adrian Jarvis converted to bring a final score of 8 – 47.
This was an excellent performance by both forwards and backs. If it was the latter that caught the eye, it was only that their running and passing was so confident and penetrative that it is clear that the future of Harlequins is safe in the policies of youth development which the management have instituted.
It is almost invidious to pick out any individual performances, but Reay and Barratt in the centre both had good games as did Scott Bemand, back from Bristol, for whom he played on Saturday, particularly when he went to scrum half and Keogh went to the wing. But the whole team played with considerable skill and commitment and continue to make the effort of watching the second team very worthwhile.
