I said maybe, as my journalistic qualities pale into insignificance compared with some of the reports on this site.
No way I thought but I found an old Dictaphone and wanted to play with my new camera so…………….
Another hot and sunny day in Twickenham, on the way I jog past HQ (late again) one lot of old boys are warming up to thrill the crowds at the Stones concert whilst young stars of the future are set to perform at the stoop.
Luckily they kick off at 2.05, I just have time to get a quick pint in the Debs bar and result: they now sell cider.
First impressions Roth look up for this, good body language and plenty of chat to each other. Quins start slow, passes not going to hand or falling short of the intended recipient. Roth score the first try after a couple of minutes but miss the conversion. We reply with an unconverted try of our own and pick up the pace. Another unconverted try followed by a penalty and drop goal see us comfortably in the lead after half an hour.

This is where things started going pear shaped for me, with the sun beating down I require another pint, my 15 year old Dictaphone gives up the ghost and I’m trying to watch the game, keep score and take photos at the same time as the Quins backs set the game alight. The pint option seems good as it coincides with the kick off of the big boys on Sky. As I walk from the west stand to the east I witness a superb break from full back Tom Williams giving a silky reverse pass to set up another try.

Half time 23-5.
The second half takes up where the first left off, more Quins attacks more Roth defence with the occasional good counter and more Quins trys.
I had a chat with a couple of people around and the general opinion was the Quins Academy is showing its worth.
The final score is something like 55/43 – 5 depending on who you ask, I asked 4 people, a player, coach and 2 fans, each gave a different score? Who cares (macca) we won.
I’m sure the offy site will tell all.
Two players I picked out today I’m sure you will have heard of – Tom Williams and Tom Guest, both had excellent games. Guest is not the biggest player on the pitch but today for me was the biggest performer on the pitch.

Tom Williams
I’m afraid I didn’t concentrate too much on the pack as the backs are playing some great flowing rugby but next time I will try to do better.

Spider?
Well done Roth for keeping going to the end (like London Welsh) and not giving up the ghost like my Dictaphone did, next time I’m taking pen and paper.
I doff my hat to all that have done some brilliant reports for this web site in the past, getting scores and names right is something I can only aspire to.
Sorry it’s short and sparse but I’m off out the back to listen to those old Strolling Bones in the comfort of my back garden.
Cheers
