Quins Ladies Challenge Chesham
By Jo Everett September 16 2003
It was to be a close-fought game as the Quins Ladies took on last season’s table toppers, Chesham, (Chesham Ladies 22 – Harlequin Ladies 15)
Harlequins kicked off and quickly forced themselves into Chesham’s half. Quins kept Chesham under pressure, but the home defence held them out and Chesham then kicked themselves out of trouble. With a better position on the pitch, Chesham were able to return the pressure, keeping Quins deep in their own twenty-two.

Harlequins defended well, but the Chesham attack continued, finally stretching the Quins defence enough to run through and score. The remainder of the first half was evenly-matched with both sides challenging well but failing to cross the try line.

Quins started the second half with a more relentless attack, finishing off with Winger, Rachael Bullingham, opening the scoring for the visitors. Chesham were quick to retaliate, continuing to kick themselves into a strong attacking position whenever they won possession. Chesham made the most of these opportunities and were soon fourteen points ahead.

Harlequins refused to give up on the game, and began to use their strong mauling game to force Chesham onto the back foot. When Quins won the lineout deep in Chesham’s half, the forwards were quick to use their “catch and drive” to power across the try line where captain, Sam Marshall, touched the ball down. Minutes later, Quins used the same move, with Susie Seymour-Smith scoring, to bring Quins within five points of a win.

Chesham were to seal their victory with a penalty kick late in the first half, leaving a defeated Harlequins team with much to think about ready for next Sunday’s game, at home against Plymouth.
