The fashion show featured Karl Rudzki, Simon Miall, Pat Sanderson, Josh Taumalolo, George Harder, Bill Davison and a woman whose name I didn’t catch. They all did well showing the new clothing from the shop. There was decent beer in the bar and pretty good food too.
Now all we needed was a win from the side that comprised Academy players to old favourites returning from injury.

There was a knock on straight from the Quins kick off which game London Welsh a scrum on their 10m line from which they put in a long clearance kick. Keogh, playing on the wing for this game, chipped the ball back to give LW a lineout. Parker harried the LW jumper well and the Quins defence pressurised their opposition but the referee gave the first of his dozen or so penalties against the home side. They kicked to touch and were awarded a free kick on the half way line for jumping early at the line out. Some robust tackling by Ace followed and LW kicked to touch. Ace threw well to Jim Evans who was excellent in the lineout all evening. A rolling maul was set up before Bemand sent the ball left to Keogh who showed his pace before the ball was sent right and Adrian Jarvis made a good break through the centre which ended with a scrum about 5m out to Quins.
The London Welsh scrum put pressure on the Quins scrum but the ball was passed to Jarvis who again went to break but a m ix up in midfield lead to crossing between him and Ace. Evans stole the resulting LW lineout and Keogh got his hands on the ball again leading to an electrifying break of about 35 yards but the break came to nothing when the referee saw one of about 20 or more knock ons which seemed to plague the first half.
A high kick put up by LW was dropped backwards by Matty Moore and Tom Williams covered back and ran the ball into touch about 5m out. There was a big knock on by the LW jumper but the referee missed it and awarded a penalty for offside against Quins. LW kicked to touch and had another line out on the 5m line. They won the ball and sent it to the middle of the pitch where although the Quins defence held strong the attacking side were awarded a penalty for not rolling away. LW took the scrum option, won it and sent the ball right where the wing knocked on – the referee managing to spot this one!
LW were caught offside at the scrum and Jarvis cleared the pressure with a kick to touch. Evans took the ball well again, the ball was sent to Allen who ran laterally before offloading to Moore, to Ace, to Williams then there was another break up the left wing by Keogh before the move broke down when Quins were deemed to have gone off their feet at the ruck.
A good break up the left by LW was poorly defended by Moore but luckily Williams covered well but a penalty was awarded against Ace for not using his arms in the tackle. LW kicked to touch 5m out and in a well worked move round the front of the lineout Ritchie, the hooker, scored in the corner. The kicker converted the score to 7 points with a tricky kick from the touch line. 0-7, 24mins.
London Welsh attacked well with a rolling maul from the restart before having a good break through the centre which was stopped by a good covering tackle from Matty Moore. Another good LW scrum and attack through the centre took them close to scoring but they were awarded a scrum 5m out. The scrum turned 180° and the front rows came up but for some inexplicable reason the referee reset it and gave the put in to LW again. The scrum half Lewsey scored on the half hour and it was again converted to 7. 0-14, 31mins.
The restart was retaken by Quins, good recycling followed and Jarvis made another sharp break through the centre offloading to Horstmann who continued the move before the ball was chipped through for Moore to chase and score. Jarvis got the conversion to cut the deficit to 7-14 on 33 minutes. Just two minutes later the hand pumped Green King IPA ran out.
A quick tap penalty was taken by Tiatia, who passed to Jarvis and Horstmann who sent the ball left to Worsley who showed great pace before passing to Keogh on the left who was tackled into touch just five metres out. The pressure came to nothing when Quins were penalised for pulling down in the lineout and LW kicked long.
Ace again made a break in the middle of the pitch before passing to Jim Evans who thundered forward at great pace to score from about 35 yards out. Jarvis again converted to tie the scores 14-14, 41mins.
A high kick was well taken by Moore who passed left to Keogh who passed the ball right to Reay to Bemand to Ace who went over in the right corner. Jarvis got the very difficult kick and Quins went into half time ahead 21-14.
Mike Worsley was pulled off at half time and replaced by Ceri Jones. Again the starting few minutes were scrappy with a number of knock ons by both sides being given by the referee before Ace was binned on 6 minutes for what seemed to be charging dangerously into a maul. Soon after Collier should have been binned or sent off for coming round the side of a ruck and kicking Cracknell on the floor, but the referee missed it and the touch judge didn’t see fit to draw his attention to it. Cracknell went off to be replaced by the Academy hooker, Cameron Dott.
The referee may have had occasion to bin Collier soon after for unnecessary use of the boot in a ruck but again he didn’t. The LW wing, Swords, scored in the corner on 11 minutes and the kick was missed cutting Quins’ lead to 21-19. Soon after Ace returned to the action Collier went down with cramp and whereas most people would have left him until the LW physio came on, Keogh went over to help him – what a nice lad he is.
Jarvis was pulled off by the management on 22 minutes and was replaced by Andy Dunne who was in action soon after kicking a penalty after another good Keogh break. 24-19, 24minutes.
Evans stole another lineout but soon after a mass scrap broke out between the whole LW side and a few Quins forwards. The result was a penalty to the visiting side.
Another good lineout by Quins lead to a break by the props Dawson and Jones who recycled the ball well to Keogh who looked very hungry for the ball all evening. Quins won a scrum in front of the posts about 5m out. The ball was quickly moved left through Dunne, to Reay, to Moore who was high tackled but managed to get the ball out to Keogh who took his chance well to score right in the left corner. The difficult kick was missed and after the restart kick went out on the full the final score remained 29-19.
All in all it was a good display by the mixed side and it was good to seem people returning well from injury. One problem was immediately after the start of the match and after half time when London Welsh had the upper hand.
