A couple of years ago he he captained the Ireland Schools team that travelled across Australia unbeaten from nine matches. Duffy played at centre for Ireland in the IRB U21 World Cup 2002 in South Africa and was one of the players who took part in a training day for youngsters at Soweto Rugby Club. He also scored against Ireland’s win over England which gave Ireland the chance of a 5th/6th place play off against France.
In August 2002 he picked up an ankle injury that kept him sidelined for two months after Connacht’s pre-season win over Munster.
Duffy was playing for John Kingston’s previous side, Galwegians, when he first started being noticed by the press but, in the same way that Evans is currently protecting Ugo Monye, JK looked after Duffy by insulating him from the attentions of the hacks who were baying for an interview with him. These reporters were describing him as the next Brian O’Driscoll, if they are correct then Quins have made a very astute signing.
Welcome Gavin, we hope you enjoy your time at The Stoop
