Quins Ladies Show their True Colours at Avon
By Jo Everitt March 18 2003
It was an early start for the Quins Ladies, who completed the Cancer Research UK fund-raising abseil of Twickenham Stadium, before heading down to Avon for Sunday’s league fixture. The extra adrenaline paid off however, with Quins securing their sixth consecutive win.
It was not an ideal start for the Harlequin Ladies. Although they were able to put Avon under pressure from the outset, their game lacked the control that they would need for the points to start coming.

After an unsettled first twenty minutes, and a few words from captain, Sam Marshall, Quins began to play a much smoother game. With the ball now being kept alive in contact and much closer support play, Quins quickly worked their way into Avon’s half. The points soon followed with winger, Tanya Richardson, running through to open the scoring for Harlequins.

The second half started with a Harlequins kick-off and within minutes Quins had regained possession. Avon’s defence was scrambled by the running of Number 8, Leah Carey, who off-loaded to centre, Jo Morgan. Morgan then carried the ball over the line before converting the try.

Quins kept up the pressure, with the forwards spoiling just about every Avon scrum and lineout. With no platform to work off, Avon could not begin to use the speed of their backs or the strength of their back row, leaving Harlequins free to dominate possession.

Harlequins’ next try followed when prop, Lou Clancy took the ball on from a Quins lineout. Once again Avon’s defence was broken up, allowing scrum-half, Saskia Brazier-Kobus to run through and score.

Quins continued their strong support play and the final try came as Carey received the ball from centre, Gemma Athorn, and ran through on the right wing.

Quins had worked hard for their win but had also conceded a lot of unnecessary penalties. With two big games remaining, they cannot afford to give away possession so easily. Currently just second in the table, Quins face Clifton IIs at home in a fortnight, and then a season finale, away against league-leaders, Chesham.
