Winning Streak Continues for Ladies
By Jo Everett March 5 2003
Sunday saw the Harlequin Ladies continue their recent winning streak with their 82 - 0 defeat of Newbury. This winning streak keeps Quins Ladies withing striking distance of the top of the table.
On receiving the kick-off, Quins quickly worked their way back into Newbury’s half. With the forwards securing good possession at every breakdown, Harlequins were soon able to open the scoring. It was centre, Jo Morgan, who ran through the scrambled Newbury defence to score the first of her two tries.

A second try soon followed with number 8, Leah Carey, also breaking through. Four more tries were to follow for Carey throughout the game. Quins kept the game in Newbury’s twenty-two for much of the first half and other tries came from hooker, Susie Seymour-Smith, and Gemma Athorn at centre. By half time, Harlequins were 27 points clear.

The second half saw an unsettled start by Harlequins, with several handling errors turning over possession. The team were able to settle back into the game and the floodgates opened. Newbury’s restart kicks repeatedly landed in the arms of full-back, Alex Burbidge, whose strong runs took the ball straight back into their half. Quins began to make better use of their support play and tries then followed for Dani Knight, Leah Carey, Jo Morgan, Gemma Athorn, Saskia Brazier-Kobus, Donna Tracey and Leah Carey.

It is a credit to Newbury that despite having only 14 players, they were committed for the full eighty minutes. Late in the second half, they were to make several counter attacks to force Quins back into their own half. Harlequins challenged well in the rucks to steal back possession and keep Newbury from scoring.

It may have been a satisfying scoreline for Harlequins, but their final three league games present a considerable challenge, and include away games against the two teams above Quins in the league table: Chesham and Avon. Will Harlequins keep up their winning streak?
