Mel Deane
By The Prof March 1 2003
Harlequins announced the signing of the former Sale (sorry Sharks) centre to bolster a midfield that has seen a number of injuries so far this season.
Name: Mel Joseph Deane
Previous Clubs: Longford, Richmond, Buccaneers, Connaught, Sharks (Sale)
Honours: Ireland A, Ireland 7's, Penguins
Position: Centre
Date of Birth: 16 January 1975
Place of Birth: London
Education: St Joan of Arc, Rickmansworth
Height: 1.77 m (5'10")
Weight: 89kg (14st)
Nationality: Irish
Marital status: Married

He has joined with immediate effect and will be eligible to play on Sunday against Bristol, he has been signed for next season as well (providing Quins steer clear of relegation). He has scored 17 tries in his 66 appearances for Sale (sorry Sharks) including a try against Quins in the last match of last season.

He is renowned for his good decision making and speed on the pitch and for his approachability and friendliness off the pitch. Because he is both strong and quick he has even been likened to Wales and Lions centre, Scott Gibbs.

He is a fine 7s player appearing not only for Sale but also for Ireland. He won his first Ireland A cap against Scotland A in February 2000.

He went on the Ireland tour to New Zealand and scored a try in the 3-56 victory over a New Zealand Divisional XV, he was the only uncapped player and he partnering O’Driscoll in the centre in a side captained by our very own Keith Wood.
