Quins Ladies Crash out of Cup
By Jo Everett November 18 2002
Harlequin Ladies 0 - Supermarine 32 The Harlequin Ladies saw an abrupt end to their cup campaign on Sunday, at the hands of Swindon-based, Supermarin.

Supermarine were to dominate from Harlequins’ kick-off, running in two tries in the first ten minutes of the game. Quins were to have very little possession in the first half, and when they did have the ball in-hand, the forceful rucking by Supermarine repeatedly regained them possession.

Quins slowly began to organise their defence, but Supermarine maintained their pressure and were to cross the line twice more in the first half.

The second half saw a much less one-sided game, as Quins finally began to hold onto the ball in the breakdowns, and fight their way down the pitch. A tighter defensive line also kept Supermarine from crossing the line in the first twenty minutes of the second half.

Despite Harlequins’ hard work and their determination to play for the full eighty minutes without giving up, Supermarine scored two more tries to complete their impressive 0-32 victory. Quins will now enter the shield competition next month, but first they face Clifton IIs away next Sunday.

The Harlequin Ladies would like to thank the Cabbage Patch Pub in Twickenham for kindly sponsoring Sunday’s game, and for their ongoing support this season.

Man of the Match was awarded to Dani Knight for her consistent hard work throughout the game.

Sequin of the Week went (a little harshly, I feel) to Jo Everett for her post-match preening in order to disguise her bruised legs!

And after the game…

With match sponsors, The Cabbage Patch Pub, hosting a school disco on Sunday night, the Harlequin Ladies were quick to lick their wounds, conceal their bruises and dress appropriately for the occasion.

Joined by members of their youth team, their families and the somewhat cheery Diamond Geezers, fresh from NEC Harlequins’ defeat of Wasps, the Harlequin Ladies set the scene with their own “school day”. With school-mistress Gallagher keeping firm control of the unruly “pupils”, the team sports proved remarkably popular! It was through the cunning of one particular Geezer, who was unafraid of bribing his “teachers”, that team Harley won the competition.

With the school disco to follow in the Room at the Top, it is highly likely that many of the “pupils” were not top of the class come Monday morning!

Want to get more Involved?

The Harlequin Ladies are always on the lookout for new players of all abilities, from the complete novice to those with years of experience. For younger players, the youth team caters for girls aged from 12 years old. The senior squad train at the Harlequins Club Ground on Wednesday and Friday nights from 7.30pm, and matches are played on Sundays.

We are also looking for new sponsors and can offer opportunities from match day sponsor to club sponsor. For more information, please contact us at quinsladies@hotmail.com
