Quins Ladies beat Table-Toppers Avon
By Jo Everett November 11 2002
Harlequin Ladies 15 – Avon Ladies 14. Sunday saw the Harlequin Ladies beat league-leaders, Avon, who had been undefeated so far this season

It was a slow start for Quins, who made it very hard work for themselves in the first half. Though Avon conceded numerous penalties, Harlequins were unable to take advantage of possession, repeatedly losing the ball in contact.

Avon were quick to read Harlequins’ drift defence, cutting back inside to break through and score their first converted try. When Quins failed to learn from this mistake, Avon made the most of the opportunity, to score their second try.

It was just before half-time, when the Quins Ladies were able to raise their game and return the pressure. After winning a scrum just ten metres out, Second-row player, Tanya Wilson, picked up the ball and charged down the blind-side to open the scoring for the home team.

The second half saw a much more organised game from Harlequins. They made good ground with the ball in-hand, and were able to retain possession at the breakdowns.

When Avon conceded another penalty, this time just short of their own try-line, it was Prop, Louise Clancy, who broke through Avon’s defence to secure another five points for Quins. Now just one try away from a win, the Harlequin Ladies began a relentless attack. It was from a Number 8 pick-up that Winger, Saskia Brazier-Kobus, was able to run in close support and then score the winning try.

Avon began to fight back hard, forcing Quins deep into their twenty-two, but Quins kept up a secure defensive line to ensure their narrow, but well-deserved victory.

Next week, the Harlequin Ladies play Supermarine at home, in the second round of their cup competition. Win or lose, they will be partying afterwards, with their “School Disco” night at Twickenham’s Cabbage Patch pub.
