A friendly draw in very unfriendly conditions
By Jo Everett October 29 2002
Sunday’s gale force winds did not keep the Harlequin Ladies and Teddington Antlers from playing their friendly fixture in Bushy Park. With both team using the game as a training opportunity for their newer players, there was a very positive atmosphere despite the terrible weather conditions.
The Quins Ladies started with the wind behind them and quickly forced themselves into Teddington’s half. Teddington held them out with their strong tackling game, but Quins kept pushing forward until Danni Knight, at fly-half, was able to break through to open the scoring.

Teddington followed up their kick by stealing back possession and driving up the pitch; Harlequins now found themselves defending right on their line. Teddington were then able to break through the Harlequins’ defensive line to even up the scoreline before half time.

The second half saw both teams making good ground when they had possession, but in the severe weather conditions, there were many handling errors and turnovers. When Quins gave away a penalty just five metres out, Teddington were able to drive over and steal the lead. Harlequins were quick to retaliate and just minutes later Centre, Saskia Brazier-Kobus, ran through the Teddington defence to equalise.

Unlike their earlier games this season, Quins did not lose focus in the final twenty minutes of the game, but fought back into Teddington’s half to finish in a strong attacking position. With their strong support play and lineout jumping, and the positive finish to the game, the afternoon was by no means a disappointment for Quins. They now need to build on the successes from Sunday’s game, ready to face Newbury away next week.

Man of the Match was awarded to Jo Everett, making her debut at Outside-Centre.

Sequin of the Week went to Air Stewardess, Tanya Wilson, for her impressive arrival in full make-up and uniform.
