Quins started brightly and could have scored in the 4th minute when winger Max Willcocks went close after a flowing movement. Quins kept up the pressure but were unable to turn this into points. It was ten minutes before Bristol got into the Quins' half where they put the scrum under some pressure. In the resulting attack, prop Ben Hopkins was penalised and yellow carded for handling in a ruck. Bristol took a scrum in front of the posts and drove over for a try in the 16th minute. Score 0-7.
Quins now tackled resolutely and, still with 14 men on the field, forced a penalty just outside the Bristol 22 in the 23rd minute. Adrian Jarvis converted confidently. Score 3-7.
Back to 15 men, Quins took an excellent high re-start kick, spun it from right to left where fullback Tom Williams came into the line at great pace driving into the Bristol half. He was pulled down just short of the 22 but a great cross kick caused panic in the Bristol defence. Kai Hortsmann recovered the ball and slipped it to winger Ugo Monye who bounced off a would-be tackler to score in the corner. The conversion attempt slipped past the posts. Score 8-7.
The Quins almost scored a duplicate try from the ensuing re-start with open side Chris Cracknell bursting through the Bristol centres to set up another ruck just outside the Bristol 22. A cheeky chip kick by lock Ben Thompson just evaded the on-rushing three quarters and the ball was cleared to touch. But, it was all Quins now and, in the 37th minute, after a series of attacks, the Bristol fly-half was carded for interfering at a ruck and Jarvis kicked his second penalty from in front. Score 11-7.
Half Time. Changes: Barrett for Monye.
Bristol started quickly and, in the 3rd minute, forced a penalty in front of the posts just outside the Quins' 22. Thankfully, the kick was put wide and, within three minutes, this proved to be a costly error. Quins worked the ball into the Bristol 22 where they put the Bristol scrum under a lot of pressure. First Horstmann charged down a clearing kick and then lock Tom Parker did the same, following up to touch down in the corner. The conversion into the wind dropped just short. Score 16-7.
Quins continued to cut through the Bristol mid-field defence with centre Tom Allen causing chaos with an excellent break in the 17th minute. The Quins lineout, which dominated both in defence and attack, then stole Bristol's ball and prop Sam Walton was stopped just short of the line.
For the next 15 minutes, Quins continued to dominate, turning over a number of Bristol balls in the ruck, but the only scoring opportunity was a penalty kick that again fell short into the wind.
As time ran down, Bristol mounted a big effort to save the game. In the 32nd minute they were celebrating a try from a forward drive until they realised that the referee was signalling a Quins' penalty for holding on in the tackle rather than a Bristol try. But they came again and, in the 35th minute, converted a penalty from in front to close the gap to just six points. Score 16-10.
Quins then seemed to be holding on comfortably until, four minutes into injury time, the Bristol left wing (who had caused trouble all day) burst down the field appearing to have the beating of fullback Tom Williams. Inexplicably, instead of scoring himself, he flung a wild pass in field which was knocked on. Adrian Jarvis cleared to touch from the resulting scrum and the referee blew the whistle for a famous U21s win.
Great performance and, on another day, they will turn even more chances into points and give someone a real roasting. Bring on Bath!
