Following a minute’s silence, in memory of all those who lost their lives in the recent events in Bali, it was a Harlequin Ladies kick-off. Reading were unable to make much ground with the ball, before the Quins defence powered in and stole possession. Harlequins then forced themselves deeper into Reading territory but could not maintain possession.
The first half was to see many turnovers and needless penalties conceded by both teams, but it was Quins who dominated, keeping the ball in Reading’s half. When Reading gave away a penalty just 10 metres out, Number 8, Leah Carey, drove through their defensive line to open the scoring for Quins. Kate Sinfield, at second-row, followed up with the conversion.
Just minutes later, Quins were to score again, this time with newcomer, Helen Cushion, picking up and driving over to score her first try for Quins. A second conversion by Sinfield now put Quins 14 points ahead. Reading began to tighten up their defence, but it was not enough to keep Carey out, scoring her second try just before half time.
The second half saw a different pattern of play, with Reading beginning to kick for territory and forcing Quins to play a more defensive game. Although Quins were able to make several strong run into Reading’s half when they did have possession, all too often the ball was turned over and kicked back down the pitch. The continued pressure from Reading eventually turned to points with two tries scored and converted in quick succession.
Despite the Quins forwards repeatedly stealing Reading ball in both the lineouts and the scrums, the team could not regain the momentum of the first half. It was in the very last minute of the game, that Reading were to cross the line once more, leaving Quins with a very disappointing draw.
The Harlequin Ladies would like to thank the Cabbage Patch in Twickenham for sponsoring Sunday’s game.
