Quins opened the scoring with a penalty kicked by Fitzgerald after only 3 minutes. Saracens early attacks met with strong defence but a penalty for foul play at a ruck gave Little the chance to level the scores after about 8 minutes, which he took. 3-3.
Pressure from Quins forced Saracens back deep into their 22, and when their clearance kick was charged down back row Chris Cracknell dived on the loose ball to score the first try of the night. Fitzgerald kicked the conversion to take the score to 10-3 after 10 minutes.
Saracens, with continued pressure, forced Quins to defend strongly again. Thing could have got nasty when Craig Quinell tried to make friends with the Quins forwards, introducing them to both his fists, but sensibly the punch up was really over before it began.
Karl Rudzki was shown the yellow card after 18 minutes for slowing the ball down at a Saracens ruck but the Quins defence held strong for the 10 minutes he was off the field. With Quins down to 14 they played well with only a forward pass stopping them from scoring again after a good lineout and a great break from winger Ugo Monye. Someone was heard to say that Quins had been queuing up like they were at Tescos to score when the pass went forward.
With Karl back on Quins pressure lead to the Saracens 7, Ryan Peacey, going to the sin bin after 34 minutes, Fitzgerald missed the penalty. Quins took full advantage of being a man up to set up a sexy rolling maul from a lineout which lead to hooker Gregg Botterman claiming Quins second try. With the conversion missed the referee blew for half time. Quins 15, Saracens 3.
Saracens, back to 15, started the second half strongly, with only a last gasp tackle keeping them out. Quins were penalised for offside and then for not being back 10. Saracens, being close to our try line, took the scrum, but a poor back row move ended with their number 8 driving into his own man and a scrum being awarded to Quins. Unfortunately we lost the scrum and wing Richard Haughton got in for a try which was not converted. 15-8.
8 minutes into second half and Quins were again caught offside and not back 10 to give Little a kickable penalty, 15-11. A great lineout steal by Horstman lead to a penalty for Quins which Fitzgerald kicked to take the score to 18-11 after 14 minutes.
Quins managed to stop a driving maul, giving them a scrum at which Saracens conceded a free kick. Taking it quickly, Saracens were caught offside and Fitzgerald had no trouble adding another 3 points to the Quins total. 21-11 with 20 minutes gone. After another couple of minutes Powell, who had a good game, was pulled off by the management with Scott Bemand taking his place.
With 27 minutes gone Simon Maill was sent to the sin bin for not rolling away from the tackle, and he was soon joined by Abdel Benazzi who had been trying to slow down Quins ball. Seb Fitzgerald was replaced by Adrian Jarvis with 7 minutes of the game left. A strong run down the touch line by Max Wilcocks lead to a Quins lineout, the ball was moved into the midfield but an attempted drop goal was missed.
With both sides back to 15 for the last few minutes, I think Quins finished looking the stronger of the two. Their strong defence was forcing errors in the last Saracens attacks and the game finished with Quins on top.
Final score Saracens 11, Quins 21.
In my opinion Seb played well, our lineout looked good against strong opposition, and the defence was solid throughout.
After the game I managed to speak with Scotty who said that the young side showed a lot of character and were good all round, he was pleased by the performance. "Very, very pleased" Mark Evans added.
