Harlequin Amateurs: The New Season Has Arrived…
By Charlie Allen
September 5 2008
After months of waiting, the new season is almost upon us and Harlequin Amateurs are looking stronger than ever for their assault on the Hertfordshire & Middlesex 1 League title. Following promotion last season, the club, led ably by ex-Harlequin and England player Bob Hillier and the Committee members, has invested in the playing resources and infrastructure.

The result is growing club membership and facilities that other clubs will be envious of. These include:

Clubhouse

Harlequin Amateurs have recently taken control of running the Club House overlooking Teddington Lock, off Broom Road. This is now a dedicated rugby club facility, and is being decked out in suitable attire!

Floodlights

The delivery of the new floodlights for the training ground allows for more productive training sessions to be held, particularly as the long winter nights approach. These will be a real asset to the club over the coming months.

Physios

The club continues to add to its support staff and now has three excellent physios providing well-used cover at club games and training sessions.

New Players

There has been a massive influx of new players into the club which has seen training numbers swell significantly. The result of this is that Harlequin Amateurs will be running two highly competitive teams, one in the League, and one in the Merit Table Competition, as well as operating an active third team and Veterans team throughout the season.

Pre-season

Harlequin Amateurs pre-season has shown how the club is going from strength to strength.

The club now trains twice a week; on a Monday concentrating on fitness, and on Wednesday's concentrating on skills and the impact of the new ELVs.

August 30th saw the club take over 40 players for a trial match at Uxbridge RFC as the players begin to implement the ELVs and show their skills. This weekend two back to back fixtures are being played against Teddington for the players to try and cement their positions.

With over 30 new members, Harlequin Amateurs begin their league and merit table campaigns on September 13th, in fine form.

Going from strength to strength

The club continues to be ambitious in its growth plans, spurred on by Head Coach Duncan Simpson, Assistant Coaches Dave Hitchens and Karl Booth, and fitness coach Gregg Marsh.

If you would like to be a part of this exciting setup, whether an experienced rugby player, or just wanting to take up a new sport, then come along to training at 7.30pm every Wednesday at St Mary’s University, Waldegrave Road, Twickenham.
