Quins Ladies Lose Early Lead
By Jo Everett September 18 2002
The Harlequin Ladies travelled to Weston Super-Mare for their first game of the season, and let their early lead slip away. Weston Super-Mare 15 - 10 Harlequin Ladies.

The Ladies were quick to dominate after kicking-off, forcing themselves deep into Weston territory. Scrappy play by Harlequins handed the home team a series of penalties, but they were unable to use them to escape their own half.

Rolling Maul

Once Quins tightened up their play, Number 8, Leah Carey, was able to break through and open up the scoring for the visitors. Fly-half, Kate Sinfield, was unlucky to hit the post in her conversion attempt.

Quins kept up the pressure, despite Weston’s strong tackling game and minutes later 2nd Row, Vicky Gallagher, picked up from the back of a ruck and powered over to score her first league try.

The second half saw the Quins Ladies lose their focus and allow Weston to score their first try. The home team then stepped up their play and scored two more tries in quick succession. In the final twenty minutes, Quins tightened up their game, once more forcing the home team onto the back-foot. Despite several strong runs and driving mauls taking Quins close to the try-line, Weston held them out to secure their win.

With many new players and youth team “graduates” playing, the game provided a valuable learning opportunity for the team. With two weeks to prepare for their next game, the Harlequin Ladies can now build on Sunday’s experience ready to face Plymouth at home.

Congratulations to Man-of-the-Match, Tanya Wilson, for a hard-hitting performance in the back-row.

Sequin of the Match was awarded to Hooker, Cathrin Thomas, for her considerable distress at the loss of a recently-pedicured toe nail!

The Harlequin Ladies would like to thank Budget Rent-A-Car in Hampton for their support for this game.
