30 April 7:30: Meet the Referee Evening
By Prof April 16 2008
Quinssa are delighted to announce that Wayne Barnes will be hosting another Meet The Referee evening in the Jesters Bar in the Etihad Stand of the Twickenham Stoop on Wednesday 30th April at 7:30pm. Geraint Ashton-Jones will also be present to talk abou this role as a technical advisor at Harlequins, so it promises to be a great evening.
Quinssa will be making a donation to the Wooden Spoon Society (Harlequins' current official charity) at Wayne's request and will also be running a raffle for the charity.

Some quick facts about Wayne Barnes:

  • born 20/4/1979 in Gloucestershire
  • started refereeing at the age of 15
  • was the youngest referee to be appointed to the Panel of National Referees at the age of 21 in 2001
  • became a professional referee in April 2005
  • in 2006 refereed his first full tests in the Pacific Five Nations and Italy v France in the Six Nations
  • in 2007 he was appointed one of three English referees for the Rugby World Cup
  • in 2008 he became the first English official ever to take charge of a match at Croke Park
  • in the infamous World Cup quarter final match between France and New Zealand it is believed he became the first referee in history to ever give a forward pass decision against the All Blacks
Please note that this is in the Jesters Bar in the Etihad (East) Stand, NOT in the Members' Clubhouse as previously advertised.

Another excellent referee evening.

Prof, thanks for organising it. Thanks to Wayne and Geraint too for giving up their time to prove just how difficult a ref's job is. I'm beginning to admire referees for the job they do (No, I haven't been drinking!) but that won't stop me judging their decisions in a completely biased and partisan way. (Sm13)

Well said Captain Quin, a very informative evening. I am not totally convinced that we supporters completely go along with the way linesmen are used judging by the questions posed. I suppose if safety is of paramount importance, what does the odd (every other) crooked ball in the lineout matter? Very frustrating though when sitting in the stands.

A very enjoyable evening.

Many thanks to Quinssa for organising it and to Wayne & Geraint for giving up their time to attend.

Very enlightening - perhaps we now know a little more about why referees make the decisions they do. Thought the audience participation on the video clips from live games was great. Really showed just how difficult the jobs of both the referee and the linesmen are.

As CQ says however, it will still be very difficult (maybe impossible) to take off those multi-coloured specs during our matches.(Sm101)

If I had known about this last night I would have asked if this was the way forward in refereeing.....

A work colleague who is involved with Marlow RFC tells me that Wayne Barnes refereed a testimonial match there at the weekend. Players included the chef Heston Blumenthal. The punishment administered for minor indiscretions was apparently issued from the bottle of port he was carrying.

I think this idea could catch on!! (Sm64)

Captain, I wasn't the person who organised it - I think it was another Rugby Bird production.

I thoroughly enjoyed it too.

Geraint Ashton-Jones was very interesting, it's great to get the view of a poacher turned game keeper.

It was weird but when Wayne handed me the whistle and cards I felt like a God, I was all powerful, although I couldn't see correctly and I kept wanting to blow the whistle and raise my arms randomly. I also forgot everything I knew about front row play (Sm20) (Sm21) winking smiley

Thanks very much to GAJ and Wayne Barnes for doing it

An excellent and informative evening. Thanks to Quinssa for organising it and to GAJ and Wayne for the fascinating insight into what the officials are doing.
