St Nicholas Old Boys 12-50 Harlequin Amateurs
By Charlie Allen March 12 2008
8th March 2008 - Herts & Middlesex League 2. St Nicholas Old Boys (SNOBs) 12 - Harlequin Amateurs 50. Top of the table played bottom of the table in Ickenham on Saturday, as St Nick's tried to escape relegation and Quins pushed for an unbeaten season.

From the kick-off Quins showed why they are top of Herts Middlesex 2 South, as they turned over Snobs and were quickly awarded a penalty. Within two minutes, Quins were 3 points up through a converted penalty and then almost immediately from the restart scored their first try - Gary McCarthy stepping past the SNOB's flyhalf and putting in Andy Edwards for a try. McCarthy converted to give an 11 point lead.

Harlequins looked menacing whenever they had the ball early on, and quickly had a second try, McCarthy somehow jinking through the defence and sliding in under the posts. Up front the Quins pack were controlling the line-outs and scrums and from a St Nick's scrum came the away side's next try. As St Nick's were pushed back their fly half was unable to pass the ball quickly enough, allowing Richard Magnus a simple intercept and a try under the posts.

St Nick's finally got some ball towards the end of the first half and managed a try of their own, as their pack drove over following tough Quins defence. Immediately however Quins took the ball back up-field and Andy Edwards took his second try following fantastic handling by prop Karl Booth and centre Shaun Phillips.

In the second half the pace of the game fell as the home side consistently slowed the game up. The referee began to award more penalties to Harlequins, which Russell Wigginton took forward at speed time after time. Ben Van Rensburg found a fantastic line from a tap penalty to score a try, before Andy Edwards took his third try with a similar move.

In the final minutes, St Nick's scored a consolation try with a great line break in midfield, before Andy Edwards managed to bag his fourth try after a mazy run up the pitch. Quins reached the 50 mark through the boot of McCathy and returned to SW London with another league victory.
