New players came to the fore for Harlequin Amateurs in the first match of the season against Sutton and Epsom’s 3rd team, the Swifts, with the Amateurs winning the good-natured game 34 – 7.
The friendly was a good chance for Coach Geoff Ashby to evaluate the squad before beginning league competition. “It’s difficult to gauge players sometimes on the training pitch, “ says Ashby. “During a match situation you can see their potential – and their weaknesses”.
Players from both the 1st XV and the Wanderers joined forces on the field for the friendly. Both teams made use of rolling substitutions throughout the game and used the opportunity to give both squads a good run-out.
Three new players scored points on their debut. Winger Colin Crowther scored two tries, Flanker Matt Cross scored once and Fly Half Tim Cairns converted twice.
Seasoned players Matt Jones, Kwasi Appah and James Haydon also ran in tries before Sutton and Epsom made a final strong charge over the tryline and converted to game 7 points just before the final whistle.
Also making their debut were Philippe Ah-Sun, Phil Hunter and Ian Langman.

The Amateur 1st XV will be playing their first game in the Herts/Middlesex 3 South league this coming Saturday 14 September against London Tribes on Saturday at the Richmond Athletic Ground, kick-off is 3pm, while the Wanderers will face Camberley at their home ground, also at 3pm.
Coach Ashby is confident going into the new season. “Good positive things came out of this first game, but there is still a need to consolidate our teamwork with structured training needed” he says.
“This year will be make or break for the club. We’ve set ourselves a target to do well in this league and it’s up to us to prove we are up to the challenge.”
