Aston Villa v. Bolton Wanderers preview

Ivan Campo
By Matt Lawton December 31 2002
Resurgent Bolton Wanderers make the hour or so trip down the M6 to Birmingham to take on fellow strugglers Aston Villa in a vital relegation battle on New Years' Day as both sides complete their hectic League schedule in the Festive season.

Wanderers return to the scene of their magnificent 3-1 victory late in the 1997/98 season which almost kept Bolton up in the Premiership. That season Bolton were relegated but they aren't looking for a similar fate and a victory at Villa Park or at least avoiding their first defeat in three games could go a long way to helping Bolton to achieve their goal.

French magician Youri Djorkaeff doesn't make the trip with the rest of the team as he has been playing with a bruised rib for the past month and that finally caught up with him at the weekend when he had to miss the 0-0 draanw away to high flying Everton. The same injury prevents World Cup winner Djorkaeff from taking the field at Villa Park but the former Inter Milan and Monaco midfielder should return to action in the FA Cup 3rd Round game at home to Sunderland this coming Saturday.

Also missing for Bolton will be veteran midfielder Paul Warhurst, who has a hamstring injury, French defender Bruno N'Gotty is out with a calf problem and Spanish defender Ivan Campo, who was terrorised by young Everton striker Wayne Rooney in last week's game, misses the game because of a one match suspension. Stepping into Campo's role will be veteran defender Mike Whitlow, who missed the Everton game because of a knee injury.

England striker Michael Ricketts should also start despite previously being doubtful due to a neck injury that he picked up at Goodison Park and prevented him from completing the full ninety minutes.
