An thoroughly enjoying game was played out in front of a packed Reebok, with both sides having several chances to open the scoring.
Bolton made much of the early running and could've taken the lead on several incidents but they failed to take the lead through the likes of the ever impressive Youri Djorkaeff, the tireless Per Frandsen, the again impressive Kevin Nolan and Dean Holdsworth who put in a lot of work which fellow striker Michael Ricketts could learn from. Liverpool had periods of possession and could've taken the lead when Milan Baros survived both a call for offside and also a possible foul on Simon Charlton to race towards goal but only to fire against the post when one-on-one with Jussi Jaaskelainen. Bolton then again took control before Baros again raced away only this time to put the ball in the net when again faced with Jaaskelainen on another counter attack in first half stoppage time to give Liverpool a 1-0 half time lead.
In the second half Liverpool were in control early on but it was then Bolton who scored through a counter attack via an excellent finish from winger Ricardo Gardner.
Liverpool then again took the lead with fifteen minutes remaining when Baros grabbed his second goal to seemingly give Liverpool a 2-1 victory.
However, substitute Ivan Campo, very impressive on his debut and threatened the Liverpool goal and equalised with a header barely three minutes from the end with a goal that looked to have grabbed a point for the Wanderers. As it turned out though Liverpool again took the lead barely a minute later when Emile Heskey volleyed home to give Liverpool a victory which they didn't really deserve.
U.W.O. Man of the Match - Youri Djorkaeff was again at his creative best and midfielders Per Frandsen and Kevin Nolan never stopped running or tackling. Youngster Danny Livesey looked comfortable on his first team debut after he came on as a sub for the injured Anthony Barness. Ivan Campo showed his undoubted class in the second half after he came on at half time to replace Mike Whitlow. Ricardo Gardner and Dean Holdsworth also played their parts in a good performance which contributed to an excellent game. My man of the match award would probably go to Kevin Nolan who never stopped running or trying to play against his home town club.
