Past Matches

Overall their have just been the three matches (to my knowledge) between the sides with the Lanarkshire team winning all three of them. The first match between the sides was a Scottish Cup-Tie in February 1962, with more than 5500 packed into Stair Park to see the home side eventually go down 3-1 after John Hanlon had equalised Motherwell's opener (Thanks to Jim Pratt and Jimmy Sproule for the info). The other two matches took place in the old Second Division in the 1968/69 season. At Stair Park the steelmen recorded at 2-0 victory and later in the season at Fir Park the score was 3-0 to the Well.

Blues Team News

Stranraer manager Billy McLaren has promised Motherwell favourite James McFadden "special attention" when the sides meet in the Scottish Cup. "He's a real talent — no question about that, " he said. "I am sure he will demand — and get — special attention. "James seems to have a fiery temper and that could work in Stranraer's favour, but that's not something I want to dwell on ahead of the game." Early Team News - Derek Wingate is doubtful due to damaged ribs

Motherwell manager Tommy McLean took his side to Hampden to face his brother's Dundee United side who had recently been to the Final in recent seasons without success. The game started with Dundee United taking control of the game but it was Motherwell who took the lead from Iain Ferguson after 30 minutes. With it only 1-0 at half -time ,the 58,000 crowd had no idea what an amazing second half was about to unfold. Dave Bowman equalised for United early in the second half before a young Phil O'Donnell and veteran Ian Angus put Motherwell 3-1 in front, this only put `Well fans into a false sense of security as John O`Neill gave got United's second and in the dying seconds Darren Jackson scored from a header at the edge of the box beating an injured Ally Maxwell who was suffering from two broken ribs after a challenge form United's John Clark. In extra-time, `super-sub Stevie Kirk came on for Motherwell to score the winning goal, Kirk had got his super-sub tag from scoring in every one of Motherwell's previous rounds.

Two other players from the past who have played for both clubs are Jim McCabe and John 'plug' Muir.

Arguably the greatest player ever to have played for the Blues who also played for Motherwell is the one and only Jim McCabe. To some fans it is difficult to convey just how good he was but suffice to say when he played the Blues were getting crowds of 1700 to 2000 at home games. Some might remember his goal against Falkirk when, from just outside the box, he dribbled past 5 defenders and sent the goalie the wrong way! Celtic had some interest in McCabe but nothing came of it. McCabe formed a strong forward line for Stranraer in the 1976-77 season alongside Derek (Freddie) Frye. (Thanks to Nish Walker and Laurence Nelson for the info)
