Match Report
The U's came out showing all intention of getting forward and attacking Bury, dominating large periods of the first half. Noteable efforts coming from Shane Tudor and Omer Riza.
Although the U's were in control for most of the half, Bury did manage to scare the U's on a couple of occasions. Bury's Jon Newby managed to get clean through after a mix-up in the United defence, only to put his shot wide.
The U's went in at the break probably the more disapointed of the two sides after failing to score. The U's support drowning out the home supports pathetic efforts to get behind their team definately gave Cambridge a boost.
The Bury players struggled to compete football wise with the U's in the second half, and started trying to mix it up with the U's. A few late challenges from both sides saw the game start to turn scrappy in the second half.
Omer Riza showed us all once again why we love him with his first league goal of the season. His electric pace gave him the advantage over the two hapless Bury defenders and managed to get through on goal from a Luke Guttridge through ball. He then went on to round the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net from a tight angle. There was still long way to go in the half and the U's fans faces showed that this game was long from over, with 35 minutes still to go.
The U's had to show they had the courage to battle out results and kept their resiliance throughout a scrappy half.
Shaun Marshall had a good game but a couple of scary moments still from him. One of them led to a small tussle with Stev Angus, we hope there are no long term worries there...
Everyone thought it was a case of 'ere we go again as the U's entered injury time, and the fourth official held 5 minutes up on his digital board. After conceding injury time goals on more than one occasion last season the U's fans had all right to be worried, and some nervous scenes followed.
With 11 men behind the ball for the majority of injury time it was a case of just shutting shop and hoping for the best. At the large relief of the U's following the man in green blew up for full time, and the scenes that followed wouldn't of been out of place at an insignificant cup final (Worthington or Community shield). The players embraced in a group hug and U's fans just went barmy!
At last an away win! Can we repeat it at Bournemouth? Preview of the Bournemouth match to follow.
