Benkenstein will join Durham's pre-season tour

ICL cut short

Despite initial fears that Dale Benkenstein would be unavailable for Durham's pre season tour to South Africa because of his commitments to the rebel Indian Cricket League, Durham Cricket Club have announced that Benkenstein will meet up with the rest of the team when they arrive in South Africa.

Durham's pre-season tour party depart for South Africa on 28th March and return on 9th April, initial reports suggested that Benkenstein's involvement in the rebel ICL tournament which runs until the 7th April would cause him to miss the tour.

Benkenstein who played for Delhi Giants in their victory over the Mumbai Champs on Monday is playing in his second ICL tournament. His involvement with the rebel league has already seen him banned from domestic cricket in his home country of South Africa but up to now hasn't caused any problems for Durham despite the ECB's tough stance on the ICL.

Paul Collingwood, Steve Harmison and Phil Mustard will miss the pre season games due to England commitments and Michael DiVenuto will also miss the games, instead meeting up with the team on their return to the Riverside.

The team will spend ten days at The High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria where they will train and play four one day games.  Two matches will be played against Johannesburg University and two against the Highveld Lions. The Lions is the team that Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett have both played for.

Re: Benkenstein will join Durham's pre-season tour
The situation with the 2 Indian leagues is becoming increasingly farcical. The ECB are threatening to ban players who participate in a competition that won't clash with the domestic season but are totally happy to allow Mascharenas to sign up for the 'official' league which means he will miss a chunk of the County season!
I noticed that Kent are concerned about their overseas players potentially being banned by the ECB and they have already hinted at the possibility of legal action.
I know none of this affects Benks but who knows what will happen in future seasons? Something will have to be sorted out soon to put an end to the confusion and uncertainty.
