Luciano Burti says goodbye to Ferrari

Luciano Burti has announced that he will be leaving Ferrari and his role as test driver with immediate effect. Burti who only just signed a new 1 year deal with the team has asked to be released so he can take up a racing position. This opens the door for Felipe Massa.

Luciano Burti has asked Ferrari to free him from his current contract as he seems to have found a return to racing rather than testing and Ferrari has obliged by letting him go. Was he pushed though is the question with all the rumours about Felipe Massa joining the test team. Burti has yet to announce where he will be racing but his departure would seem to confirm the arrival of Massa at Ferrari.

"I am grateful to Ferrari for the opportunity in 2002. It was a fantastic experience, and it gave me the condition to improve my technical, knowledge and speed. I had a deal with them for the 2003 season, but I decided to return to racing. Due to my good relationship with the team, they agreed to release me, and we will keep a close link for future opportunities with Ferrari and Maserati."

"I realised that I am ready to compete, and my aim for 2003 is to race in a competitive series, where I can win races and championships, which is my main motivation in motor racing. I will announce my plans for this season soon. I would like to thank all team members at Scuderia Ferrari and Maserati for the success we had in 2002, and I wish them all the best for this season."

Burti was a vital part of the test team and we wish him all the best for the future. His work on tyres was often boring and monotonous but he played a very big part in out success last season.
