Joel Porter
All their other away games have so far ended in defeat, so now’s the time to improve.
The Northampton and Walsall games are followed by two homes games in a row, against Huddersfield and Brighton, and it would be good to go into those games with a clean sheet or two behind them.
In his column on the club website, Michael Nelson (rightt) says Pools have been working on their defending in training this week, and those who saw the 3-3 home draw against Swindon last weekend know why.
They can’t depend on Joel Porter coming to the rescue with a hat trick in every game.
They say that defending doesn’t just start at the back, but Pools made the mistake of allowing Simon Cox to run at them from deep and by the time he came up against defenders, the damage had largely been done.
Pools have given away too many goals this season, and while some of the moaners would have Danny Wilson sacked for allowing that to happen and the entire defence replaced, that’s not the answer.
For a start, there are no replacements, and taken individually, most of the defenders are quite capable of holding their own in league One. The trouble is, as a unit they’ve done been doing it.
Northampton’s would be a great place to start, and it would be even better if they could carry it on at Walsall. Pools are a point ahead of the Cobblers and six behind Walsall, and as long as their away form remains a problem, they’ll continue to be closer to the bottom of the table than they are to the top.
NICKNAMES FOOTNOTE - Northampton are called the Cobblers because their fans talk a load of it.
