James Brown
Boss Danny Wilson praised a top team performance and was quite right when he said Colchester's two late goals flattered them.
At 4-0 up, Pools looked good and a dodgy penalty decision and a late header put a false impression on the scoreline.
Pools played some clever, controlled football and Colchester, playing Championship football last season, simply didn't have an answer.
The bad news is that Ben Clark missed out with an ankle injury that could keep him sidelined for up to a month, but the good news is that everybody else did well.
And what good goals - two crackers from James Brown, and beauties from Willie Boland (left) and Richie Jones.
Our verdict on the players:
Arran Lee-Barrett - nowt to do most of the game, one great save and flapped a bit at the last goal, but generally steady.
Antony Sweeney - deserves a chance to make right-back place his own.
Sam Collins - great choice as captain, solid game.
Michael Nelson - just as solid, he and Sam locked out Colchester's attack. One great tackle prevented a goal.
Richie Humphreys - well, he was good old Richie Humphreys.
Richie Jones - looks a good signing, scored a great goal and close to at least one more.
Willie Boland - we've waited a long time for that goal, and he was the organiser.
Gary Liddle - far better than last season, rain straight intead of in circles.
Andy Monkhouse - another who looked like his old self after a lot of frustrating performance last season. Let's hope it lasts.
James Brown - well, what is there to say? the lad is another Adam Boyd and possinbly even better.
Joel Porter - some great running helped create the spces for Brown etc, he deserved a goal.
None of the three subs were on long enough to merit a mention.
So after a close-season of anxiety for the fans, that was a lot better than most people expected.
The big question now is: can they do it again?
