Have Pools done enough in the transfer market?

Power (left) and Jones
By Clarence Road
August 4 2008
So is this it then? Days to go to the big kick-off, and Hartlepool have made just three new signings, and at least one of them is not for this season - former barcodes keeper Mark Cook lacks experience and is unlikely to challenge for a League One place this season. The other two newcomers, Alan Power and Richie Jones, are not exactly seasoned campaigners either.
In fact, the shortage of activity by Pools in the summer transfer market has set some alarm bells ringing amongst supporters.
Wilson TV 3Many thought Danny Wilson (left) needed about six new players to turn last season’s frustrating under-achievers into a team fit to challenge for something in 2008-09.
But a pair of young midfielders who couldn’t get into Nottingham Forest’s first team (Power) or Man United’s reserves (Jones) are hardly building up the pre-season expectations.
There are a number of possible reasons Pools have been so quiet in the transfer market:

They have no money (for transfer fees or wages.
Wilson couldn’t find anybody else he fancied.
They think they are good enough.
They don't move fast enough when players are available and miss out on them.

Whatever the reason, it’s a worrying situation unless a number of players are going to do better than they did last season, James Brown is going to be a revelation in attack and the defence is not to give away too many soft goals.
Hands up all those who think that’s all going to happen.
A month ago, after signing Jones, Wilson was in the Mail quoted as saying: "There is no rush. As long as we can bring people in before the start of the season I will be quite happy. Certain things might fall into place before the season kicks off.

"It is always a big bonus if you can get people in for the pre-season games but we have to be realistic.
"It is patience more anything – we just have to wait and see what transpires.”

Well, there might have been no panic at the beginning of July, but it’s now the beginning of August and nothing’s happened.

Hopefully, the club will prove the doubters, including us, wrong.
But don't hold your breath.
