Hartlepool deny receiving offer for Nelson

Michael Nelson

June 26 2008
Hartlepool have denied a story which allegedly appeared on Sky Sports News that they have received an offer for defender Michael Nelson from relegated Leicester City. So when will he be leaving, then? The club doesn't usually comment on transfer speculation, but has decided to act this time, and fans will have to guess why.

The brief statement on the club website says: "Contrary to reports on Sky Sports News, Hartlepool United FC have not received any official bids from Leicester City for defender Michael Nelson.
"The club will not be making any further comment at this time."
So, we know there hasn't been an official bid, but the statement does not say there hasn't been an approach or an unofficial bid. Sky's website says that Leicester have lined up a move for Nelson, not that they have made a bid.
Far be it from anybody to suspect for a moment that any club would encourage a report of this nature to appear on the telly in order to unsettle a player, because of course that sort of thing does not go on in football.
Leicester's current manager - or he was when we last looked - Nigel Pearson, is known to be having a clear-out at the Salt 'n' Vinegar Stadium and some of the relegated club's top players are already on their way out.
Pearson has said that he has a rebuilding job on his hands, and Nelson is an experienced League Two player who could do a job for many sides, even though his form last season wasn't up to his consistent best for Pools.
He extended his Pools contract recently and if a club was to make a bid, it's to be hoped Pools would want something like £500,000 for him.
