That happens at the beginning of July, when the scramble for places at clubs really gets under way and activity at the top end of the market starts to filter down into the lower rungs of the domestic football ladder.
Wilson says he has players in mind and plenty of names have been linked with the club, but so far former Nottingham Forest midfield player Alan Power (right) is the only Pools newcomer.
Hopefully more will follow, but it seems clear that Wilson is hampered by a shortage of cash at the Vic, where last season's crowds hardly gave owners IOR a lot of cash to play with this summer.
Most fans would agree that Pools need at least one full-back, depending on where Pools see Anthony Sweeney's future, at least one more midfield player and a forward who can pu the ball in the net regularly.
The trouble is, the queue for that sort of player has always been a long one, and goalscorers don't come cheap.
Richard Barker got his fair share last season, and if he gets a full season free of injury, Joel Porter has proved he can do the business up front as well, but Pools need more consistency in attack as well as in midfield.
We are constantly told the squad's strength is in playing attacking football, but there's no point in being good at that if you don't put the ball in the net consistently.
Whatever positions we are talking about, Pools need new players, and so far they have only signed one.
Hopefully, all that will change in the next couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, the Newcastle game is at the Vic on Saturday July 19, two days after the squad returns from a few days in Scotland. A week later Pools stage their pre-season centenary tournament, when Huddersfield, Sunderland and Hamilton Accies are in action with the home side.
