Bookies make Pools 33-1 for League One title

Danny Wilson
By Clarence Rode May 29 2008
The "when does he leave" saga surrounding Danny Wilson appears to have ended - or, at least, it should have by now - so all that's left to occupy us during the early stages of the close-season is to keep track of the transfer speculation and examine the odds for the new season. The bookies have made Pools 33-1 shots for the League One title.

That means the bookies believe Pools are in for another season of flirting all too closely with the relegation dogfight at the bottom of the table.
After missing out in the play-offs this time, Leeds are favourites for the title at 7-2, while relegated Leicester are second favourites at 11-2 - difficult odds to set, we would have thought, when they haven't got a manager and their chairman is apt to sack the boss every couple of weeks anyway.
It's difficult to argue with the Leeds odds - if they can avoid breaking the rules and being docked points during the summer, they should go back up this time.
Meanwhile, promoted MK Dons and Peterborough have been quoted at 9-1 and 8-1 respectively for the title, which makes them - according to the bookies - three times more likely to win it than Pools.
Rubbish.
Posh have loads of dosh and Darren Ferguson is likely to stay at London Road, but Paul Ince has been linked with several jobs and might not be at MKD when the season starts in August.
For our money, Carlisle - who just missed out this season - look good bets at 16-1.
At the other end of the betting, Cheltenham are favourites to go down at 66-1 for the title, while Crewe, Yeovil and promoted Stockport are all 50-1.
All the above odds are from William Hill, but while we agree that Leeda are favourites to go up, we make Carlisle second and Huddersfield and Leicester joint third.
Likely to struggle are Hereford, Millwall, Yeovil, Cheltenham, Stockport, Crewe and Walsall.
Pools, of course, will be mid-table all season and a late surge will take them into the play-offs, where they will triumph in the Wembley final.
Dream on ...
MEANWHILE , Pools aren't going to Holland this pre-season - they're going to Scotland instead. They play at Greenock Morton on Tuesday, July 15, and against Falkirk at Stirling University on Thursday July 17.
On the weekend of July 26 and 27, Pools host a pre-season tournament celebrating the club's centenary, with Huddersfield - also 100 this summer - Sunderland and Brann Bergen also involved.
Their last pe-season game is away to Rotherham on Saturday August 2, with the League One season starting a week later.

What would the odds be if Danny left? 5-1?
