The Hartlepool United playing squad, 2008-09
By Clarence Rode July 20 2007
If you want a detailed biography of every member of staff at Hartlepool United or need to know how much the reserve goalkeeper weighs or how tall the club captain is, look somewhere else. Because stuff like that is not here - this is not a stats page, but a look at the personalities manager Danny Wilson will be relying on between August 2008 and May 2009. We will update and amend as necessary.

After taking the team to promotion in 2007-08, Wilson didn't do quite as well on the return to League One. But 15th was still one of the bst finishes in the club's history, no matter what the moaners say.
In the summer of 2008, it was relatively quiet, with only three new signings when many fans were hoping for more.
The Pools squad, with numbers (* indicates new signing), for the season is:

- Jan Budtz - ex-Doncaster keeper, loan spell at Wolves, dodgy at times last season
- Jamie McCunnie - ex Dundee Utd and Dunfirmline defender, now regarded as a midfield player

- Richie Humphreys - voted player of the century by the fans in 2008. What more is there to say?

- Willie Boland - wily midfield general might lack pace, but has plenty of brains

- Michael Nelson - defensive rock since joining from Bury 3 seasons ago
- Sam Collins - signed in january 2008 for £75,000 from Hull, appoointed club captain for the season.

- Gary Liddle - great free in 2006, needs to remember he doesn't play for boring Boro any more

- * Richie Jones - midfield free from man Utd, scored a great goal on his debut v Colchester
 - Richard Barker - signed from Mansfield mid-2006-07, rock hard striker, but lacks pace

- Joel Porter - great Aussie finisher, hampered by injury, but fit at start of 2008-09

- Andy Monkhouse - fans' favourite, but has suffered for arguing with opponents, refs etc

- Ben Clark - reliable defender, very unlucky with injuries

- James Brown - after two seasons on the right, has switvched to attack and scored twice on first day. Watch him go

- Antony Sweeney - non-stop midfield player, looking good at right-back but doesn't always get the credit he deserves

- * Alan Power -  free from Forest in summer 08, runs all day tackles the grass

- David Foley (tiny, but fast as owt. Can run between the legs of big defenders, but needs to score more goals)

- Michael Mackay - another speed merchant striker who can score, but not the finished article yet
- Matty Robson - has to make it this season, or his time may be up (we said that last season)

- Arran Lee-Barrett - keeper freed by Coventry, has overtaken Budtz as first choice
- Jonny Rowell - academy midfield player who is allegedly full of promise
- Martin Young - another young un

- Matty Tymon - ditto

- Joe Tait - ditto again

- *Mark Cook - keeper freed by Mags, said to be full of potential
