Dons on the Move to MK
By Paul Holland September 19 2002
Wimbledon should move to Milton Keynes by the end of the year after getting the green light to set up a temporary home at the National Bowl.
An independent FA-appointed commission approved Wimbledon's highly-controversial relocation earlier this year.

But the club have been looking to move to the area before their new stadium in Milton Keynes is built and do not want to see out the season at Selhurst Park, which they have shared with Crystal Palace for more than 10 years.

And on Wednesday night, Milton Keynes Council gave Wimbledon planning permission to turn the Bowl into a 12,000-capacity football stadium, which could be ready by the time the Dons host Watford on Boxing Day.

The unprecedented relocation plan, which has resulted in disgusted supporters setting up AFC Wimbledon, was originally blocked by the Football League. But chairman Charles Koppel, backed by businessman Pete Winkleman - whose consortium are building the club's new ground - refused to give up.

And not content with being given the green light to go to Milton Keynes, Koppel has succeeded in his quest to secure a move to the region well before the brand new stadium is built.

A delighted Koppel said: "This is fantastic news for Wimbledon Football Club."
