After our undeserved 3-0 win on Tuesday, its off for the 80 mile trip to South London this Saturday, and a chance to extend our 5 match unbeaten run at The Valley, Charlton.
The Addicks will want a much better finish than last season's 11th place. However, it's been (like Town) a mixed bag of results for Athletic this campaign so far.
Alan Pardew's men kicked of the 2008/09 season with a 2-0 home win against Swansea City, but lost 1-0 away at Watford the following Saturday. An impressive 4-2 victory at The Valley against promotion favourites Reading then arrived. But was followed up by two defeats, away at Preston (1-2) and at home to league leaders Wolves (1-3). It was back to winning ways at Doncaster with a 1-0 victory, and then Charlton's first stalemate of the season with a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest. Last Saturday, Sheffield Wednesday came away form London with all 3 points after a 2-1 win and then on Tuesday, Pardew's side lost 1-0 at Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace.
The Addicks currently occupy 17th position in The Championship table, 2 points behind 11th placed Ipswich. Their Carling Cup season ended at the first hurdle, losing at Yeovil Town by a goal to nil.
It will be another Ipswich old boy reunion on Saturday as former favourites Matt Holland and Darren Ambrose face their former club, looking to get Charlton's season back on track. Whilst Town's Kevin Lisbie looks set to start on the bench against his former employers.
Saturdays referee is Mr G. Hegley who has officiated Town Games five times over the years. Morecambe's 4-0 defeat in the FA Cup in 2003, our 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in 2004, a 3-2 win at home to Derby in 2005, our 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday that same year and most recently, our 2-0 home victory over Southampton last season. From those five games, Mr Hegley has issued 10 yellow cards and 1 red card (shown to Jim Bentley of Morecambe).
Our league record away at Charlton
Played: 17
Won: 5
Drawn: 3
Lost: 9
Goals:
For: 21
Against: 33
Of our 5 victories in South London, the biggest is by 3 goals to one, achieved twice over the years. Once in a Division 2 game in 1960, and most recently in our Play-off winning season on 99/00, Jim Magilton amongst the scorers that day.
Our heaviest defeat at the hands of Charlton is by 5 goals to one, way back in a Division 2 encounter in 1959.
The largest attendance is 25,893, who saw a premiership game on New Years Day 2002. Two Marcus Bent strikes not good enough for Town, as Charlton scored 3. The lowest gate watched a 1-1 draw in 1991. Just 6,939 turned out for the Wednesday evening encounter. David Linighan scored Town's goal.
SGR FM's pundit and Legend Micky Stockwell, is our all time leading scorer against Charlton with 4 goals to his name, matched only by another Portman road legend Ray Crawford who also got 4. David Johnson, John Wark and Ted Phillips each notched 3 a piece.
Over recent years, The Valley has become a second home for Ipswich players, with Matt Holland, Marcus Bent, Darren Ambrose, Herman Hreidarsson and Darren Bent all making the switch to South London, making the grand total of players that have represented both clubs a massive 34, that list also includes, Ben Thatcher, Eddie Youds and the super Ray Crawford.
Leggi predicts: A welcome victory on Tuesday, for Town, which has now extended our run to 5 unbeaten, one more and we'll equal Jim's best run as gaffer. And against a Charlton side which has sold most of its quality I can see us extending that run. We must, of course, play a lot better than Tuesday night and an early goal should settle the nerves. Only change I would make to Tuesday's team is to bring in Norris for Campo. The Little fella is really finding his feet at Portman Road now and has much more energy in the tank than the ageing Spaniard.
I'll predict a 2-1 win for The Blues.
No game next weekend, due to the boredom of another International week, Next up is Swansea City at Portman Road on October 18th.
