"It's a good move for me, though, going to Bristol. It takes me closer to my family in Wales and that is very important to me and it also gives me a chance to work with Gary Johnson again, who I know well.
"I'm looking forward to my time at Bristol but I want to wish every success to Ipswich."
Bristol City manager Gary Johnson thinks he has a good player in Williams, adding: "I think our supporters will see why I've brought him here pretty soon.
"I believe Gavin will improve our squad. I know him very well and actually I never thought he would become available at the fee we've paid.
"The opportunity was too good to miss.
"The medical was important but people do have bad runs of luck and Gavin had three separate injuries which were all football-related.
"He had a knee injury, ankle injury and a hernia. You get over those, they weren't career-threatening.
"A fit Gavin Williams - mentally and physically - is a very, very good footballer."
