Old Faces And New At Training.
By Cuth
July 6 2002
If you had taken a trip up to Scircoat moor yesterday you might well have seen over twenty chaps training in the hope of gaining a contract to form part of the team to take the Shaymen into the next chapter of the club.

Mystery Players Turn Up For Town

Some of the faces might have been recognisable.

Robert Herbert, Craig Smith, Andy Farrell and Nicky Heinemann are the only playing employees of the club at this moment in time, and they were joined by some of the players who were released at the end of the season.

Paul Stoneman, Craig Midgley, Steve Bushell, Ian Fitzpatrick and Steve Kerrigan also took part in the training sessions in the hope of being a part of the team that tries to take the Shaymen back into the Football League on the first attempt.

But, do we really want these players back?

Paul Stoneman first joined the Shaymen in 1995 and will always be classed as a hero with the fans even if he did have a poor season in our relegation season. He proved he has the ability after being a rock in the promotion season and he could be an asset next season if he can sort his discipline.

Craig Midgley did not get much of a chance last season, but when he did he showed he has the pace and skill to cause problems. He could form a good partnership again with Fitz and young lad Farrell.

Steve Bushell should be the first player to get a contract. A instant hit with the Town fans. His nickname should be forest gump because his energy levels are amazing. Please please please lets have him back.

Ian Fitzpatrick gave some dazzling performances last season, but he also had some stinkers. He has the ability and if he sticks to the task he has a chance to go far. Another must for next season.

Steve Kerrigan was a hero after his goal exploits saved the Shaymen from relegation in 200/01 season. But last season he didn't score once, and might have even struggled to score in the Acapulco nightclub the way his luck was going. He is still supposed to be struggling with a groin injury which might finish his career. But if he can prove his fitness then I would be happy to see him return.

There were some other names that are quite familiar at the first training session.

Tony Lormor had a spell with Halifax Town in the 1993/94 season in which he played 7 games and scored 1 goal. He has just been released by Hartlepool United.

Rodney Rowe  who played 8 games back in 1999 before turning down a full time contract from the Shaymen to move to Gillingham was also expected at the training session. He has been released  by Hull City.

John Beresford could also line up for Halifax next season after he has joined to help out with the coaching. Although it is not sure who permanent the position is. He has played over 400 senior appearances for different clubs such as Southampton and Newcastle and has played for some top coaches such as Kenny Dalgleish and Kevin Keegan. His last know whereabouts until now were funnily enough at Alfreton Town.
