Mulhall Was Set To Return
By Cuth
June 27 2002
Michael Lloyd and his men involved in their consortium have talked to the Evening Courier about their intentions for the club. One of their plans, if their proposals were accepted would be to bring George Mulhall in as Director of Football.

Mulhall Was Set To Return

After weeks of silence from the group, which has been put together by Gamplan International, they have explained some of the ideas that they had for the club, even if not in great detail

Their main concerns would have been the team to begin with. With no manager or players then there is no team. Town hero, George Mulhall, who guided the club back into the Football League back in 1997 was to be appointed into the strange role of Director of Football.

What this would actually mean is unknown in the football world. Many people have held this role around the country, but the job description seems to vary depending on the club and the chairman.

In today's local rag, it seems that Mulhall would have been able to choose his own men to come in and coach the first team. Whether this would have meant a full time first team manager, or just a coach with Mulhall making the bigger decisions regarding the team.

The Shaymen have already had a taster of what Mulhall's opinions of football managers are after he was one of the main men who suggested Alan Little would be the right man to take Halifax Town forward. Less said about that the better.

It seems a little strange that Mulhall would be prepared to come out of retirement, especially when towards the end of last season, he had been asked by the club to help Neil Redfearn after Little had fallen ill. Mulhall turned down the chance to help out claiming that he was enjoying life too much.

It is still quite unclear as to what the main intentions of Lloyd are. Rumours have flown around that their main intention is to have a supermarket built on the Shay within 5 years. But maybe that is just scaremongering.

But, Lloyd is no mug. He is not going to want to get involved with Halifax Town unless he was getting something out of it. They have already said they would finish the East stand. Lloyd would probably collect any income from that.

But what would Lloyd be prepared to back into the club? A seven figure fee has been mentioned that Lloyd would be prepared to pump into the Shaymen, but would that then be it?

Bob Walker, Doug Tait, and Ray Crabtree have all thrown their weight behind the bid. It had been said that they were only supporting the bid in hope that they would be able to claim their guarantees back that they have in the club. But these claims have been denied by Bob Walker on ShaymenTilWeDie.

So why else would Bob Walker support this bid?

Maybe he does really have his heart in the club, or maybe he has been promised a job out of it all if the Lloyd bid is successful. Whatever reasons he has, there is no doubt that his popularity has taken a nose dive. Rumours as usual have been rife throughout the Halifax Town community of supporters.

Until Lloyd and his merry band of men come out and give the supporters more details, then they will always struggle to get much support from the Town fans.

After all, what does a multi-millionaire businessman who lives in Huddersfield want with Halifax Town?
