Motty's Love Affair |
|
Motty has always been one of my favourites on the box. Full of stats and useless information, and always liable to dropping the odd clanger, but this has not deterred the nations warmth to this man. But my opinion of him has changed during the tournament. I first noticed it in the England Vs Brazil match. Mostly because that was the first Brazil match I have seen during this years competition. Yes we all know the Brazilians are a decent football team, but they have hardly set the world stage alight. But, on every touch of the ball, good old Motty was jumping out of his seat. In the England/Brazil match, Roberto Carlos received the ball on the half-way line, and Motson sounded more excited about that than he had done in the bedroom all year. Another instance occurred where Cafu knocked a cross field pass. Motson was screaming ecstasy about the quality of the ball, which happened to go nowhere near one of his own team-mates and out into touch for a throw-in. Maybe Motson shared the same problem as I feel the England team had. They showed the Brazilians too much respect. They are not like the team of the 70's. Yes they are a great attacking team but they are beatable. Give them too much respect though and they will beat you, just like they did England. This Sundays final will not be played by the best two teams in the world which is a shame. But if Brazil can overcome the Germans, I might just join in the love affair with good old Motty.
