Martin Bicknell has retired from first class cricket with immediate effect. He planned to retire at the end of the season, but injuries have forced him to hang up his boots.
Martin Bicknell has retired from first class cricket with immediate effect. He planned to retire at the end of the season, but injuries have forced him to hang up his boots.

Bicknell, aged 37, was in his 21st season with Surrey. He was regarded as when of the best ever Surrey bowlers and last season he become only the 15th Surrey bowler to reach 1,000 wickets.

He played a key role in the back-to-back Championships in 1999/2000 and was named as Wisden’s five Cricketers if the year in 2001. This was a reward for 748 runs and 72 wickets.

Bicknell made his Test debut in 1993 and received a surprise call up in 2003 to face South Africa. He played his final Test match fittingly at the Oval. In all he played four Test matches and seven one-day internationals.

He will now take a post as Master of Cricket at Charterhouse School.
