Mark Ramprakash hit 155 to out Surrey on the brink of victory after day three of their county championship match against Northamptonshire at Northampton. Ramprakash shared in a stand of 281with John Batty, who made 133. Surrey then reduced the hosts to 92 for 6, chasing 453.

Day One

Surrey slipped to 41 for two with Batty making eight and Newman falling for 23. Ramprakash and Butcher added 78. However Australian Matt Nicholson removed both in quick succession. Brown and Clarke then added 63. Clarke made 47 when he was bowled by Ganguly. Mahmood offered support to Brown with a partnership of 58. However he fell for 21 and was quickly followed by Salisbury and Akram. Brown still managed to complete his century and he was the last man to fall when he adjudged leg before to Nicholson as Surrey made 328 all out. Nicholson was the pick of the bowlers with four for 84.

Northamptonshire had a bad start as they slipped to 43 for three, When stumps were called they had reached 61 for three with Afzaal (28 not out) and Pietersen (2 not out) at the crease.

Day Two

Pietersen fell early on as he was caught behind for 12with Mo Akram taking the wicket. Afzaal and Sales added 48. Afzaal was then joined by Klusener and they added 52. Klusener made 32 when he was trapped leg before wicket Salisbury. Wessels also offered Afzaal support with a partnership of 74. Wessels fell for 31 when he was caught by Butcher with Clarke the bowler. Salisbury took the next two wickets of Phillips and Nicholson and Akram wrapped up the innings with the wicket of Brown. However Afzaal remained unbeaten on 136 as Northamptonshire made 300 all out.

Newman fell early on for eight, but Batty and Ramprakash took the score to 75 for one at the close.

Day Three

Batty and Ramprakash continued to done4 the Northamptonshire bowlers as both reached centuries in a stand of 281. Batty made 133, while Ramprakash hit 155. Azhar Mahmood 55, and Ali Brown 44 not out, helped Surrey reached 424 for six declared.

Northamptonshire had a dreadful start as they were reduced to 20 for four, with Azhar Mahmood and Mo Akram claiming two wickets each. Salisbury took the next wicket of Sales for 4, but Klusener and Wessles restored some pride for the hosts with a stand of 45. Wessles fell with two balls of the day left as he was trapped leg before wicket Doshi for 22. Klusener remained unbeaten on 42. However at 97 for seven, Northamptonshire will have an uphill struggle if they are to gain even a draw from this game.
