Ronnie Out Of Yorkshire Opener

Misses CC2 Opener
By David Buxton
April 20 2004
Essex captain Ronnie Irani is out of the season's Championship opener against Yorkshire after his knee flared up again in the match at Cambridge a week ago. Irani had the operation on his knee in September 2003, but has not fully recovered in time to lead his county in the match at Headingley.

Ronnie told the official Essex website "My knee is still not quite 100% right after the operation I had last September." "The rehab has gone extremely well, but I will miss the Yorkshire game next week - which is a huge disappointment."

"But I'm looking at the situation positively in the sense that we have a long season ahead and if I miss the first game of the season but play over the majority of the summer then I'll be absolutely delighted with that."

It's a huge blow to Essex, who will be captained by Andy Flower for the first Championship match of the season, beginning tomorrow, as vice-skipper Paul Grayson is not quite match-fit himself after knee surgery also.

Reggie, as Irani is known to his team-mates, is hoping to be fit for next Wednesday's CC2 match against Somerset at Chelmsford.

A full preview on the Yorkshire game to follow.
