Newcastle Want Figo Talks
By Nick Raynor June 3 2005
‘The Daily Mail’ has reported that Newcastle United are the only Premiership club that are interested in talks with Real Madrid midfielder, Luis Figo.

Real Madrid are willing to let the 32-year-old go for free transfer and it is reported that Newcastle have asked for talks with him.

Figo has been trying to attract the attention of Manchester United and Liverpool, but with £60,000 a week wage demands, neither club seem interested.

Figo said:

"I've always said the Premiership is a competition I'd like to play in one day and that's not changed,"

"I've been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United and both clubs are fantastic. Almost every player would like to play for either of those teams.

"Cristiano Ronaldo has talked to me about life at United and some of the Spanish players at Liverpool have given me references about how good it is at Anfield, too. But, in truth, I don't know if I figure in their plans."

Newcastle are still targeting him, but it seems likely that Figo will choose a club with Champions League football over the Magpies, who at the moment can offer no more than the not so illustrious Inter-Toto cup.

Newcastle are thought to be able to afford the £60,000 a week wages due to Patrick Kluivert being released, who was on a massive £66,000 per week. This would make Figo the joint highest paid at the club, alongside footballing legend, Alan Shearer
