Shine on the Right
Foreword
This interview was recorded for Hospital Radio back in 1994, Kevin Shine who had just joined us kindly agreed to talk to me at Uxbridge during a Pre season friendly .
I feel I should point out that he had no idea of the questions I was about to put to him, so sometimes hesitated and also repeated himself as people do in a normal speech pattern. I have typed it out exactly as it sounded on tape.
The Interview
CBG: Kevin, how did you come to join Middlesex?
KS: Well I have had 8 years at Hampshire and I felt it I was stagnating a little bit and I’ve got ambitions to play for England, I feel that there aren’t too many genuine quick bowlers about, and when it came to the time to make the decision Mike Gatting said all the right things to me. I wanted to come to a successful county, and I really like the way they play. I’ve played against Middlesex on a number of occasions and I really like the way they play the game, they are a professional unit. With my ambitions to play for England I felt they were the right county to join and I am really looking forward to playing under Mike Gatting who I admire greatly as a player and a Captain.
CBG: You are joining a team that won the County Championship last season, so you will need to displace players such as Norman Cowans, Gus Fraser and Neil Williams, you must be looking forward to the challenge.
KS: I hope to start the season in the first team, as I say I am a genuine strike bowler, there aren’t too many of them around in the country but I realise I’ve got to fight for my place, obviously with a county like Middlesex it is a talented squad of players and everybody has to fight for their place. Hopefully, if I bowl quickly and consistently I will get the chance and then it is up to me to take that chance, it’s a fight, county cricket it’s a fight.
CBG: What are your personal feelings about Four Day cricket? It obviously suited Middlesex last season, but what are your thoughts?
KS: The Four day game does suit me a lot better. Being a strike bowler I tend not to think too much about runs, concentrating on taking wickets, and if I get the chance to bowl at someone in the longer game it gives me the chance to run in and get a steady rhythm. I think it is better suited to the bowler, you get the chance to swing it, or you get the chance to bowl with real pace to give yourself the best opportunity to take wickets. I consider myself pretty fit and can bowl long spells with real pace. Certainly last season was a learning curve for most bowlers but I really enjoyed it.
CBG: You made your debut for Hampshire against Middlesex at Lord’s and I remember clearly you coming out to bat with Hants in real trouble and scoring a quick fire 26 not out.
KS; Yes, I remember that well. I think in my first five balls I hit four of them to the boundary all from the bowling of Norman Cowans, not easy that. With the ball I was very nervous, I had never bowled at Lord’s before and I found it difficult coping with the slope. John Carr was my first first class wicket and I still have the bail. I broke the bail and Dickie Bird kept that for me and I’ve still got that at home
CBG: Many thanks Kevin for your time, and I like to wish you well at Middlesex.
Afterword
Kevin made his debut in the opening match of the season as Middlesex, as current Champions , played the season opener against England A. He took 4-79 in the first innings of the match; these were to turn out to be his best figures for the county. He stayed two seasons, taking 29 wickets in 13 matches in 1994 but only played twice the next year picking up a further 13 victims. At the end of that season he joined Somerset where he stayed for a further there years before retiring to become Head Coach at Taunton. He never fulfilled his ambition to play for England, but in Feb 2006 he was appointed bowling coach for his country before being replaced by Alan Donald.
