The 22 year old has been a key part in manager Kevin Keegan's current team and has started the current campaign on a high after scoring in last night's 2nd round Carling Cup tie.
Last night he shrugged off suggestions his future at St James' Park was in doubt by saying:
"I am just here to play football. I can't concentrate on anything but football, so that's what I will keep on doing."
And Kevin Keegan was also quick to state that he had no intention of letting Milner leave when earlier today he gave the following interview:
"James Milner might have been played out of position for the past four years, as he did very, very well.
He's got three years on his contract with us at the moment, and I don't want to talk about losing James Milner.
His ability is top notch, as is his all-round play. He's getting better and better with every game, and (last night) he was superb. He's got ability and determination, and he can play anywhere.
He's the most unbelievable athlete. He's getting out what he puts in. He's a good trainer, and does everything right.
He has loads of energy, and is a really nice kid as well. You put all those things together and you have a hell of a player."
However, Newcastle United released the following statement today, officially disclosing that a transfer request had been handed in.
"The club is very disappointed that James sees his footballing future as away from St James' Park. He is a valued member of the squad and it is only a year ago that he signed an improved long-term contract.
We have yet to receive an offer for James that has matched our valuation of him. However should such an offer be received, then the Club would be reluctantly forced to consider it, given James' apparent desire to leave."
Newcastle are said to reject any offer which is below the £10million mark, but as well as Martin O'Neill's interest in the Under 21 International, Rafa Benitez is also said to be interested and watching to see how the situation unfolds.
The latest development comes after Leeds United chairman Ken bates revealed that the club had a player who they had a sell-on clause attached to at another club. He then stated that they had had interest from that club in buying out the clause.
He said:
"We have a sell-on clause on a player in demand at another club.
We were approached to take a figure to buy out the rights which suggests he may be set to move on.
We're happy to ride with it, see what happens and take our share."
