Ameobi Saga Continues
By Tyne-Talk June 28 2008
The Shola Ameobi Saga has suffered ANOTHER setback as West Bromwich Albion have cooled their interest in the striker, and the problem appears to surround wages. Shola who spent part of last season on loan to Stoke City has already been linked with a full time move to City, a move to Norwich where former manager Glen Roeder is manager, Hull City and now West Brom.

Initially Shola who looked set to extend his stay with Stoke City rejected the idea of a move to a club that could not provide Premiership Football, Stoke City who were promoted to the Premier League then withdraw interest.

The latest setback could see Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan £3million short in the transfer kitty and Ameobi staying at St James's Park, struggling to get a place in the side.

Should the 26 year old have moved to West Brom he would be playing Premier League football, but West Brom, like Hull appear to be indecisive about the large wage bill that would follow.

A source close to the club said:

"There was initial interest over Ameobi, but his name hasn't been mentioned for a while now.

The board know that you can't live beyond your means when it comes to Premier League wages.

And they are going to look at all of the options before making a decision on who they bring in this time around."

I think Shola should move on but i wouldnt be depressed if he wanted to stay here as you never know how injuries pan out.

Re: Ameobi Saga Continues
said it before like, but if you were shola would you take a club like west brom in june, or wait and see what july brings?

could be nothing better, but since he has had interest from hull stoke west brom and norwich he can wait in the pretty certain knowledge that he can fall back on one of them later in the summer.

i'd wait it out a few weeks yet, in his position

The longer he waits the less options he will have.. Other clubs will look at other players too. Phillips now to WBA instead of Shola..

We need to get rid now, and get the funds in.

He needs to hurry up and make up his bloody mind (Sm102)
He doesnt feature in the Toons plans for next season and all he is doing is messing everyone about.

He's not Pele or Maradona and he cant afford to be choosy/pushy about his personal terms (Sm102)

Re: Ameobi Saga Continues
why would keeping sewpakev in the squad mean not signing shola? i would imagine that they would both play together.
if he is getting offers in may and june he is among the first choice players for those clubs. why would such a player be left on the shelf by waiting until july?

and if we are waiting on the 3m we'll get for shola before we sign anyone we are going to have a depressing summer, and a shocking season lies ahead.

keep ya heads, people

We need to get rid of him asap.. for the fee and get him off the wage bill. Leaves us more room to maneuver and plan for other players.

He's not exactly a star that some club would break the bank for either.

What doesn't he understand.? Football clubs are the only source of wages for footballers. So if none of them will give you £40K/week, you're not worth it!

Apparently in Ipswich for a medical, so much for Premier League football. As per Sky Sports:

"We have agreed a fee with Newcastle for Shola and he spent yesterday at the club having a medical," Magilton told the club's official website.

"We've had a good chat and things are moving on. He will be with us again today (Tuesday) and hopefully we can get it all tied up."

Hamstring injury seems to have scuppered the deal.

Re: Ameobi Saga Continues
what has the lad done to deserve all this hostility? he played through serious injury problems when we had no-one else a couple of years ago. he may not have the talent of some others but could teach many of our recent players a thing or two about commitment to the cause.

of course, many of you think he should now leave, and quickly, to anyone, out of loyalty, or some such twisted reasoning.

been bugging me for a while now, he isnt good enough for our team but he gets worse stick than barton. out of the two, i would keep shola every time because he is not a total and utter c u n t, neither has he dragged our club through the mud.

i can only think any of you who say even 'maybe' to keeping barton yet who also slag shola off for not having left yet are maybe a bit too young or a bit too stupid to understand the double standard

Re: Ameobi Saga Continues
I certainly wouldn't lose any sleep if they told Barton to f##k off.

But Ameobi has been a player with "potential" for about 5 years now. I actually like him and I think its good to have local lads on the team.

But he is destined to drift on and off the subs bench indefinitely if he stays with us. A move is good for him and its good for us really as we could use the cash to go towards other players.

If he goes then I wish him the best of luck...if he stays however then he'll have to be happy warming the bench or playing for the reserves and if he is then so be it.

Re: Ameobi Saga Continues
I don't give him more stick than Barton.

It's a different situation, though. In terms of quality, Barton can play in any PL side, in any match. True story, even if he is a douche. Ameobi, not so much. So we can't make much use of him, and yet we can't move him. Now put that together with the "depressing summer" cited above and the fact that Shola sabotaged at least one move himself with wage demands and you can see the source of frustration.

It's not a disadvantage to have Shola available but it's a problem for this club at this time to have £3M less in the kitty than it otherwise would.
