Kitson is the latest of many players Newcastle United have, or are going to bid for according to the tabloids, most of which are unconfirmed by the club.
Keegan is yet to sign a player in this summer's transfer window and as a result the rumour mill is in overdrive.
There are two ways to view this lack of activity, firstly that the club have no intention of signing new players and secondly that Keegan and his backroom staff are busy doing their research behind the scenes in preparation for strong, decent bids
We believe the second option is the most likely reason for the lack of activity and are sure that Newcastle will aim to strengthen the squad in the coming weeks. No club has been busy with signings over the last few weeks due to Euro 2008 and it's likely that over the coming weeks there will be a flurry of activity throughout the Premier League.
In addition to rebuilding his team and replacing the 9 or 10 players who have already left the club this summer, including midfielder Emre who is currently half out the door but is yet to complete his move, Keegan has made it clear that he has every intention of making sure his best players remain at the club and are not tempted to leave by rival clubs.
Those players include Michael Owen and Steven Taylor.
Of Owen's situation Keegan said in April:
"I think it has shown another side to him that I'm not sure he knew he had. It's a crucial role, and Michael wears the armband because he's the main man. He's the one who glues it all together and I don't think there will be any problem about him staying. He has totally taken over the dressing room, with a couple of other senior players, and said 'Come on, let's take this club where it should be.'
So he'll be our main signing next season regardless of who comes and how much they cost. Michael Owen tying him down will be the biggest signing."
It was this week announced that Owen had entered into negotiations with the club to extend his current contract.
Reports this week also suggest that Steven Taylor is on the verge of putting pen to paper to secure his future at the club which will finally end speculation around his future.
